In response to a rising number of drowning incidents across Quepem taluka, the offices of the Deputy Collector and Mamlatdar have undertaken a preventive initiative by installing warning signboards at various vulnerable locations.
The move is aimed at curbing accidental deaths, particularly among individuals who frequent canals, rivers, and water bodies for bathing.
Recent tragic incidents have highlighted the seriousness of the issue.
In one such case, two youths lost their lives after entering a canal for a bath, underscoring the hidden dangers of deep and deceptive waters in the region. Similar incidents have been reported at the Salaulim canal, where victims ventured into restricted zones despite existing warnings. These recurring mishaps prompted authorities to strengthen preventive measures.
As part of this initiative, prominently visible signboards have been installed at multiple locations across the taluka, especially near canals, riverbanks, and other high-risk zones.
The boards caution the public against entering the water for bathing and warn about the potential dangers of sudden depth and strong currents.
The step is intended not only to raise awareness but also to discourage risky behaviour, particularly among youths and visitors.
Officials from the administration stated that the measure is precautionary in nature and forms part of a broader effort to ensure public safety. The authorities have also appealed to citizens to strictly adhere to the warnings displayed and avoid entering unsafe water bodies.
