Waste black spots raise questions over MMC drive to stop disposal

Waste black spots raise questions over MMC drive to stop disposal

MARGAO

Margao Municipal Council’s drive to stop the disposal of garbage at the black spots has thrown up a question or two “ Has the exercise helped to stop unauthorised waste from finding its way to the black sport? or Has the drive come a cropper?

Statistics dished out by the Margao municipality may dish out an impression that the sanitary inspectors have cracked a whip against unscrupulous elements disposing of waste in the city at unauthorized places.

Welcome to the Margao ring on the stretch between the Comba subway and the Old market road and one would come across a Sonsodo in the making with waste stacked in bundles dumped all along the road.

A drive down the ring road on Tuesday has revealed that the stretch of the road close to the Comba subway was dotted with garbage, throwing up a question of whether the MMC does not maintain vigil along the Comba subway giving the unscrupulous elements a free run on the stretch.

The Margao municipality's sanitary inspectors are believed to have caught elements red-handed disposing of garbage near the Comba railway crossing last month.

Questions are being raised about whether a similar drive has not been initiated on the ring road near the Comba subway-old market road stretch for want of illumination.

The garbage mound on the ring road has thrown up another question for the Margao Municipal Council to handle “ why has the civic body or the waste collectors engaged by the municipality has till date not collected the garbage and litter along the Comba ring road?

It is feared in local circles that with the garbage piling up along the ring road, the road stretch may become a favourite waste dumping site with the stretch not illuminated yet and there’s no vigil maintained along the stretch.

Interestingly, MMC officials in private wondered whether the police has so far played any role in keeping the unscrupulous elements dumping waste at the black spots at bay, more so after the South District Collector had a meeting with senior police officials from Margao police sub-division to draw up plans to crack a whip against the violators after Sonsodo came under the scanner of the High Court.

“If the help of the police was sought by the District Collector when the Sonsodo matter had come under the High Court scanner, the men-in-uniform should explain the action they have taken against unscrupulous elements till date,” remarked a senior MMC official.
