Who will clear the waste along Comba-Old Market ring road and stop the tonnes of plastic waste from flowing into the river Sal in the coming monsoons?
The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has made it categorically clear that clearing the plastic waste dumped along the Comba ring road falls in the domain of the Margao Municipal Council.
The Margao civic body, however, seemed to have no plans at least for the moment to lift the tonnes of plastic dry waste dumped along the Comba ring road. In fact, the civic body is grappling with the rampant dumping of waste along the Aquem ring road, which has attained notoriety as the city’s biggest dark spot.
A senior MMC official, when questioned over the dumping of dry waste dumped along the Comba ring road, he admitted that the issue comes in the jurisdiction of the Margao Municipal Council.
What’s, however, interesting to note is that neither the Chairperson Lyndon Pereira nor the Chief Officer Agnelo Fernandes have now come out with any plan to lift away the tonnes of dry plastic waste dumped along the Comba ring road.
Incidentally, while Margao MLA Digambar Kamat has taken up the issue of the waste dumping along the Aquem Power House ring road, no attention has been paid to a similar problem staring at the city along the Comba ring road section.
Incidentally, both the Comba and Aquem ring roads have no illumination, giving unscrupulous elements the advantage to dispose off the waste at the two places under the cover of darkness.
“If we have to tackle the problem of waste dumping at the Aquem and Comba ring road stretches, we have to first get these roads illuminated. Secondly, we have to maintain a close watch over these areas to keep the miscreants at bay,” an official said, while favouring imposition of fines against the miscreants.
GWMC Managing Director Levinson Martins said the Comba ring road stretch has become the waste dumping ground in recent times primarily because of the absence of enforcement by the local authorities.
