Waste Management Corp eyes Solapur agency

the goan I network

MARGAO

With no tangible solution in sight for the waste disposal problem after Fomento’s exit from Sonsodo, the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) is toying with the idea of roping in a Solapur-based agency to treat the daily waste generated in the commercial capital pending the implementation of a long-term solution.

A representative of the Solapur-based agency, which has claimed to have set up a containerized waste treatment plant in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Varanasi constituency, paid a visit to Sonsodo at the initiative of Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai. After the visit to Sonsodo, the Fatorda MLA along with the contractor headed to Saligao where they had discussions with Waste Management Minister, Michael Lobo on the matter.

Sources in the know informed that it was felt that given that around 35 tonnes of wet waste finds its way to the Sonsodo plant every day, it will require around 4-5 containerized plants to address the garbage issue pending the setting up of a state-of-the-art garbage treatment plant at Sonsodo.

Sources said the Goa Waste Management Corporation has in principle agreed to set up the

containerized plants at Sonsodo by roping in the Solapur-based agency. However, it was decided to send a delegation of officials to Solarpur before taking a final call on the issue.

When contacted, the Fatorda MLA said the containerized waste treatment plants is an answer to the

waste disposal problem at Sonsodo before the state of the art plant takes concrete shape. “It will take

months or years before the new plant comes into existence. Unless we adopt short term measures to

tackle the 35 tones of wet waste coming into the plant every day, we may face a bleak future, especially during the rains”, he said.

To a question, he said the Waste Management Minister has agreed in principle to fund the five ton

containerized plants at Sonsood, but only after the officials takes a close look at the operation of such plants at Solapur. “Once the technology gets the approval, the containerized plants will be installed inside the existing shed at Sosnodo”, he said.

It will be close to a month now since Fomento had quit Sonsodo after handing over the treatment plant to the Margao Municipal Council, but a solution still eludes the Civic body on the question of the treatment of the 35 ton daily waste coming to the plant.
