Although the intensity of the rain was considerably less on Monday compared to Sunday’s torrential downpour, the region of Bardez continued to face multiple challenges, including uprooted trees, flooded roads, and structural collapses.
Despite the decreased rainfall, several parts of Bardez reported incidents of uprooted trees and inundation of roads.
Overnight rain had left many compound and house walls soaked, resulting in their collapse at various locations. Low-lying areas remained submerged for the first half of the day, though the water levels began to recede by the evening.
POWER DISRUPTIONS
The heavy rain on Sunday had already left its mark, damaging roads and causing significant inconvenience to motorists and commuters. On Monday, disruptions in power supply were reported in some areas as overhead electricity lines snapped due to falling trees. In Pirna, Tivim, a tree collapse caused power lines to snap, leading to a blackout. A similar incident occurred in Guirim, where a tree fell on the road and electrical wires.
IMPACT ON ROADS, TRAFFIC
The main road near Guirim government school was underwater for most of the day, causing major inconvenience to motorists. This road is a crucial stretch for tourists who use it as a shortcut to Parra, heading towards the popular beaches of Calangute and Candolim. The flooding rendered the road nearly impassable, significantly affecting traffic flow.
In Mapusa, several roads, including those at Cunchelim and Khorlim near Usapkar Junction, were inundated.
A house in Khorlim suffered damage when a minor landslide caused a large rock to crash into its wall. In Ekta Nagar, Mapusa, a massive mango tree fell on the road, creating further obstructions.
AGRICULTURAL, URBAN FLOODING
The torrential rain left most of the low-lying fields in Guirim and surrounding areas submerged. The water encroached onto roads near Hotel Green Park, causing significant disruptions to vehicular movement. The situation was no better in other parts of Bardez, where the rain exacerbated the already deteriorating road conditions.
INFRASTRUCTURE CHALLENGES
The condition of roads in Assagao worsened considerably due to the heavy rain. The main road near the panchayat office was left in a terrible state, making it difficult for both motorists and commuters.
Similarly, roads in Saligao and Mapusa were in a dire condition, posing a risk to the safety of drivers and pedestrians alike.
Many of these roads had been dug up before the monsoon season to shift overhead power lines underground or to replace water pipelines, adding to the current woes.
