Yet another issue at the ageing Assonora water treatment plant has resulted in widespread water supply disruptions across parts of Mapusa.
Several areas, including Datawadi, Shetya-vaddo, and Duler were hit by irregular water supply on Wednesday, causing inconvenience to residents, especially during the ongoing Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.
The water crisis started early in the day, with some areas not receiving any water in the morning, while others experienced only a trickle in the evening.
The disruption left many households grappling with inadequate water, further exacerbating the challenges during the festive season.
Sources at the Assonora treatment plant revealed that the issue stemmed from a significant pipeline leak detected on Tuesday.
Workers were immediately dispatched to address the problem, with contractors working overtime to plug the leakage.
Despite these efforts, the damage caused by the leak has severely affected the water supply to several parts of Mapusa.
“It’s odd that we’ve had record rains in the State, yet water supply through pipelines remains restricted,” said Minaxi Naik, a resident of Shetya-vaddo.
"The timing couldn’t be worse, as it coincides with the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Mapusa has always faced water supply issues, even if the problem is minor," she added, expressing the frustration of many locals.
The Public Works Department (PWD) also acknowledged the issue.
Assistant Engineer Triptesh Sirsat confirmed the disruption in water supply in parts of Mapusa and linked it to the pipeline problem at the Assonora plant.
He stated that the repair work was completed late in the evening and assured that normal water supply would soon be restored to the affected areas.
While efforts to resolve the issue are underway, the recurring problems at the ageing Assonora treatment plant have once again highlighted the need for a long-term solution to the water supply challenges in the region, especially during peak demand periods such as festivals.
This incident follows a series of water-related issues in Mapusa, a town that has faced frequent disruptions due to infrastructural limitations. Residents are now hoping for more reliable services moving forward.
