Water supply to resume in Taleigao after 45-day break

90% of affected areas expected to get water by weekend

PANAJI

Water supply to parts of Taleigao, which has been disrupted for over 45 days due to E. coli contamination, is likely to be restored by this weekend, bringing much-needed relief to residents. The Public Works Department has already resumed supply to areas like Vodlem Bhat and parts of Cardoz Wada.

The PWD had cut off supply to Vodlem Bhat, Borbhat, Cardoz Wada, Shankarwadi, Durbhat, Durgawadi, and Porshebhat after the water pipeline was found to be contaminated. The department began work to replace the pipeline for nearly 500 affected connections.

Speaking to The Goan, Executive Engineer Sarita Shirodkar said the replacement work has been completed and the department is now shifting the water connections.

“The water was released to the area upto Vodlem Bhat and parts of Cardoz Wada on Saturday and Sunday. Flushing of water through the new pipeline is taking time. By Wednesday the remaining parts of Cardoz Wada and area upto Gopika Vihar will receive water,” she said.

“By weekend, that is by Saturday almost 90 per cent of the affected area will get the water,” Shirodkar assured.

Lab tests of water samples from Vodlem Bhat and Borbhat have confirmed the presence of E. coli in the drinking water. Results of tests from nearby areas are awaited.

PWD officials said there are no leaks in the main water pipeline and believe the contamination came from private service connections.
