A couple of drinking water wells around Holy Spirit Church area have been found contaminated, with reports indicating high level of coliform organisms, rendering the water unfit for human consumption.

Margao Municipal Councilor representing Borda ward Glenn Andrade on Tuesday dashed off a letter to the Margao Urban Health Officer with a plea to check the water quality and initiate necessary action.

In one case, a report prepared by the Environmental and Pollution Control wing of Directorate of Health Services revealed that the sample of water analysed does not conform to the standards prescribed for drinking water, adding that the water therefore cannot be used for human consumption.

In another case, the sample of water analyzed has been found contaminated by coliform organisms, with the Director of Health Services clearly stating that the water cannot be recommended for human consumption.

In his petition to Margao Urban Health Officer, Andrade pointed out that ancestral wells around Holy Spirit Church, Margao, which have been used by people for years for drinking purpose have been lately found to be contaminated.

“A sample of water from a well near Holy Spirit Church was collected and tested with a private lab, with the report showing that the water is contaminated with high level of coliform organisms,” he said.

MMC Councilors said the test report indicates huge presence of coliform “  542/ml “  which are harmful for health.

“I have learnt from some sources from my ward that a black liquid flows along the gutter from the main St Joaquim road, which goes down to Modsai and along Elinio Colaco’s house, which could be the cause of this contamination,” he said, while urging the health officials to take up the issue with top most priority.
