When The Goan called up power officials to find out whether any action has been initiated against the staff manning the control room after last week s incident, it has come to light that the control room was manned by linesman helpers for want of telephone operators. That s not all. It has also come to light that of the two telephones at the control room, one was found dead on the night of the incident and was repaired only the next day following public uproar at the Aquem Power house. “There are no full time telephone operators to man the control room. The centre is only manned by the linesman helpers for want of trained staff,” a senior power official told The Goan. The Assistant Engineer Fatorda division R Sawant is believed to have warned the two linesmen helpers, who were on duty on the night of the incident when irate power consumers rushed to the Aquem control room after repeatedly getting the telephones engaged. While the consumers had asserted that the staff manning the control room had kept the receiver off the hook to avoid answering calls from anxious consumers, the AE said that his office has warned the staffers with stern action if found guilty of dereliction of duty.
