PI of Panaji Traffic Cell, Brendon D’Souza said the work was halved due to sparse traffic on roads. “Around 60 to 70 riders and drivers were penalised on Wednesday for traffic violations ranging from parking on zebra crossing and other no-parking spots, entering a one-way street from wrong side and those caught for using mobile phones while manning vehicles. Many attempted to seek pardon under the excuse that they didn’t have `100 in their wallet,” he said.
Interestingly, the excuses were offered even while the traffic police continued to accept the old denominations.
The collected amount, including the demonetised notes, were then deposited in the government treasury.
Traffic cops, however, played it smart and adopted the policy taking in possession driving licences and vehicle registration certificate books of the violators till payment of fine. All challans were paid for by the end of the day though the number of challans stopped drastically. TGN
