Residents fume, say helpless

The bypoll victory made Babush Monserrate’s day on Thursday, but not so much for his neighbours around Taleigao where, once again, the garbage dump site went up in flames.

Thick fumes were seen emanating from the dump and smog enveloped the area for a large part of the day. The smoke, which spread across at least a kilometer’s radius or more from the actual site had residents of the area fuming.

The residents have been complaining of smoke from the dump for over a month now, but little has been done by authorities to stop the air pollution. A resident, one of many who has been consistently complaining about the pollution, told The Goan, “So Babush is winning... he stays a kilometer away from us. Yet the fires at the Taleigao dumpyard rage on.”

The residents have constantly been complaining about the smoke entering their homes despite closing all windows, and of the soot that settles over even freshly washed laundry.

Though the Pollution Control Board had said they were keeping a watch on the dump, after residents complained to them in writing, no concrete steps seem to have been taken to get to the source of the problem and curb it.

Late Thursday night, fire fighters were on the spot to ensure the fire doesn’t spread.
