Why power crunch is worsening

PANAJI

Goa's power shortage reflects a wider national challenge linked to El Niño and deficient monsoon rainfall, which has reduced water levels in reservoirs, leading to a decline in hydropower generation.

Across India, hydro output has reportedly fallen by 12 to 16 per cent in recent months, reducing the availability of relatively cheap electricity.

At the same time, higher temperatures associated with El Niño conditions have pushed up electricity demand through increased use of air-conditioners, cooling systems and irrigation pumps, adding pressure on the grid during evening peak hours.

The shortfall in hydro generation has forced greater reliance on coal-fired power plants. While thermal stations have helped bridge the gap, rising coal consumption has stressed coal supply chains.
