Tiatrist Anthony Fernandes, who was held guilty for the murder of his wife Fiona Fermina Fernandes in 2016, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the South Goa Sessions Court on Wednesday.
Fiona’s brother Thomas Fernandes has welcomed the sentenced pronounced by the Sessions court, saying the accused deserved to be sentenced to life imprisonment for the cold blooded murder.
Additional Sessions Judge, Edgar Fernandes has further directed the accused to pay a fine of Rs 20,000 or in default to undergo three months simple imprisonment. The accused was also convicted and sentenced by the court for destroying evidence. All the sentences will run concurrently.
The Margao police had charged Anthony Fernandes for the cold blooded murder of his wife Fiona Fermina Fernandes on March 24, 2016 inside their rented apartment at Moti Dongor, Margao.
The police had claimed that Anthony stabbed Fiona with a kitchen knife due to a sudden quarrel and later chopped off her legs with the same kitchen knife.
The police said the accused then packed Fiona’s body along with her legs in a traveler bag and transported the same on a Honda Dio scooter before dumping the body in the TB hospital complex at Monte Hill. After dumping the bag stacked with the body near the overhead water tank, opposite gate no 3 at Monte Hill, the Margao police had charged the accused for setting the same on fire in a bid to destroy evidence in respect of the crime committed by him.
After the court pronounced the sentence, Fiona’s brother Thomas expressed his satisfaction that the court had sentenced the accused to life imprisonment. “Anthony deserved to be sentenced to life for the murder of my sister. We have lost our dear sister because of the accused,” Thomas added.
