Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao has disagreed with the government on the question of naming the Bill on regularising the structures as “Bhumiputra”, demanding to know whether Goans settled outside the State can ever hope to get a certificate that they are bhumiputras of that State.
Saying he could voice his opinion on the Bill on the floor of the House after the Opposition stated a walk out, Churchill told the media that the MLAs should examine their conscience whether any Goan settled elsewhere in the country would have the status of bhumiputra in these states.
“If the outsiders who have come and settled in Goa are bhumiputras, who are we who have taken birth on this soil. Only sons of the soil can get the title bhumiputra and no one else,” he said, while taking objection to the title of the Bill.
He demanded that the government should delete the word “Bhumiputra” from the title via an amendment, and then implement the Bill.
