Former Cuncolim MLA Joaquim Alemao’s friend-turned-foe and ex-Cuncolim Municipal Chairperson Landry Mascasrenhas has been appointed as the new president of the Cuncolim Block Congress Committee by Goa Pradesh Congress Committee Chief Luizinho Faleiro.

Acting on the resolution adopted by the Cuncolim Block panel to dissolve the Committee headed by Frenzie Coutinho and re-constitute the block, the GPCC Chief has re-constituted the new panel under Landry’s leadership. The new panel contains a couple of names of party workers who are known opponents of Joaquim Alemao.

When contacted, Faleiro said that he has dissolved and reconstituted the Cuncolim block committee following a resolution passed by the Cuncolim block Committee sometime back.

“I have not dissolved the block committee suo moto, but the decision is based on the resolution adopted by the panel. I have also taken the decision to promote the incumbent block president Frenzie as the general secretary of the South district Congress committee,” he said.

Faleiro further said that he had asked Congress leaders from Cuncolim, including PCC general secretary Altinho Gomes, Adv John Monteiro, Clafacio Dias and others to suggest names to be inducted on the panel.

Landry’s appointment is being perceived as an attempt by the Congress leadership to checkmate any plans by Joaquim Alemao to stake claim for the party ticket in Cuncolim. Sources revealed that Landry had last attended the function that was held to bless the new Cuncolim block Congress office which was attended by the strong contender for the Congress ticket, Clafacio Dias.

Besides Landry, other members of the Committee are Derek Braganza, Sailesh Jotkar and F X Cardozo as vice-presidents, Paresh Desai as general secretary, Augusto Rebello as treasurer and Glamson Goes and Agostinho Fernandes as assistant secretaries. Incidentally, general secretary Paresh Desai, who was a general secretary in the outgoing block, has retained his place in the new team.
