With civic elections at the doorstep, local MLA Joshua D’Souza inaugurated a road illumination project in Mapusa on Tuesday evening.
The work of illumination of the road connecting Morod to the main Mapusa-Panaji road was undertaken by Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA) at a cost of Rs 34 lakh.
A total of 17 decorative poles with LED fixtures have been erected along the stretch of almost half a kilometre distance.
Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza broke the traditional coconut to inaugurate the illumination project in presence of former chairpersons, Ryan Braganza, Sandip Falari and Sudhir Kandolkar, ex-councillor and North Goa District BJP Vice President Franky Carvalho.
Incidentally, the project was completed almost a year back but for reasons best known to the concerned authorities the stretch was not illuminated.
A local activist Shekar Naik had highlighted the issue questioning the delay in illuminating the road when all the fixtures were up and ready.
“I did three videos on this issue with the intention to open the eyes of the concerned authorities. It just beats me to understand why it has taken one full year to inaugurate the project,” Naik said.
He said the power department had to just give connection as the poles and fixtures were erected last year in February.
Assistant Engineer of Mapusa electricity department, Norman Athaeid and other dignitaries were also present at the inauguration.
