MARGAO
Margao City Fathers will fan to the nook and corners of the 25 municipal wards, beginning from Saturday to compile data on the number of waste generating establishments, including households and business establishments, ahead of the civic body’s plan to launch the waste segregation at source exercise from February 1.
Each of the 25 councillors have been provided with a format to collect the data on the number of establishments and institutions dotting the wards. They have been told to return the formats
with the details by the end of next week.
Margao Municipal Chairperson Babita Prabhudesai held a review meeting with civic officials on Friday evening how to go about in collecting the data on the number of waste generating establishments located in the city before the civic body knocks the doors of the government for financial help and infrastructural support needed to kick-start
the waste collection segregated at source.
Babita told the media after the review meeting that her office took stock of the situation following the visit of the Director of Municipal Administration (DMA) on January 7. “It’s now four days since the civic body had prepared a road map after the DMA’s visit to the civic body. We have prepared common formats and handed them over to the City Fathers to get details on the number of establishments in their respective wards,”
she said.
To a question, Babita said the City Fathers have been entrusted with the responsibility of collecting the data since they are well aware of the establishments located in their respective wards better than the officials. “After we receive the data from the 25 wards, we will compile a report touching upon the number of waste generating establishments, including bulk waste generators and work out the infrastructural facilities required to collect the waste,” she added.
To another question, the MMC chairperson said that the civic body has already requested the government to sanction two garbage compactors and three trucks to strengthen the waste transportation system in the city. In addition, she said that the civic body will place orders for the waste collection bins with the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA), besides open rickshaws for waste transportation.
With Margao’s solid waste management issue coming under the scanner of the National Green Tribunal, the civic body as well as the DMA has prepared a road map for the segregation of waste at source with the unsegregated waste that has found
its way at Sonsodo has almost choked the waste treatment plant.
