A 56-year-old woman, Surekha Pagi, was found dead in the sea off Galgibaga Beach on Monday after she went missing from her residence earlier in the morning.

According to sources, Surekha, who is survived by her three daughters, was last seen at her home around 6 am. She reportedly left the house without informing anyone and was later reported missing. Family members said she had been under depression for the past three days due to a family matter.

Neighbours launched a search after she could not be located. Later in the morning, some residents noticed a body floating near the shore. With the assistance of Lifeguards, the woman was brought ashore, following which the police were informed.

Police conducted the necessary inquest and panchanama before sending the body for post-mortem examination.

According to the police, the post-mortem and inquest established that the cause of death was drowning. While no conclusive evidence has been found regarding the circumstances leading to her death, police suspect she may have died by suicide.

Canacona Police have registered an unnatural death under Section 194 of the BNSS. PSI Ramdas Doifode is investigating the case.
