The identity of a dead woman, whose body was found in a well in Tivim on Sunday, has been ascertained even as Colvale Police registered the case as murder and arrested one person from Karnataka on suspicion.

Soon after the highly decomposed body of the woman was retrieved from the well, police conducted a massive operation to trace the identity of the deceased.

According to Mapusa SDPO Jivba Dalvi, police teams were formed and sent to the neighbouring states of Maharashtra and Karnataka to find out if any missing reports were lodged in their police stations.

Colvale Police also launched a search in Colvale and Tivim to find out if the deceased person was living there.

The massive manhunt finally paid off, as police managed to trace the sister of the deceased who was residing in Tivim.

“The sister of the deceased identified the body of her sister Yallama Nagappa Bekinal (35) who is a native of Karnataka but residing near Saibaba Temple in Tivim,” Dalvi said.

Further investigation revealed that the deceased woman was having amorous relations with one Manjunath of Duler, Mapusa, leading to the suspicion that it could be a case of murder.

Accordingly, Colvale Police began to investigate the case in the murder angle. Police analysed and tracked the mobile of the deceased and accordingly, the movement of the suspect was traced to Haveri in Karnataka.

A team of Colvale police which was deputed to Karnataka rounded up the accused Manjunath Manju Nhajantri (39) at Haveri, Karnataka on Monday morning and brought him to Colvale Police Station.

“During interrogation, the accused confessed of having committing the murder,” Mapusa SDPO informed.

Police disclosed that the deceased woman was staying along with her 16-year-old son in Tivim.

She had differences with her husband who had left for his native place in Bijapur.

However, the deceased woman went missing from October 14 onwards and the son then went to live with his father in Bijapur.

Police informed that no missing report was lodged.

On Sunday, a highly decomposed body of a woman was recovered from a well in Dhanva, Tivim. Colvale Police had registered the case as unnatural death.

According to the post mortem report, the cause of death could not be ascertained due to the decomposition of the body. However, the viscera was preserved for chemical analysis. Colvale Police are investigating further.
