Shadow Council for Margao on Monday made a strong demand for police investigation and action against the incident of arson, by setting ablaze the garbage transfer station at Colmorod Margao.
SCM Convener Savio Coutinho said a transfer station belonging to the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) was set ablaze in the wee hours of Sunday, thereby causing huge losses to the Council.
In a representation submitted to the Council, SCM Convener raised the fire incident before the Chief Officer, with regard to the garbage transfer station that was totally destroyed, along with over 16 waste collection bins of 240 litres. The estimated losses to the public exchequer could well be over Rs one lakh, Coutinho stated.
The SCM also expressed its displeasure to the fact that the said transfer station was mismanaged by the workers of the blue-eyed waste collection contractor of the MMC. He, however, said the fire incident has resulted not only in monetary losses to the Council, but has affected the daily waste collection in the areas of Colmorod/Ratwado etc for the past two days, causing immense hardships to the residents here.
While pointing out that the fire incident was the handiwork of some unscrupulous elements having an eye on the government-acquired land there, Coutinho called for a police investigation into the incident.
The SCM also pointed out a huge shop presently erected there illegally and another one being erected at the site.
The SCM demanded a police investigation into the fire incident so as to book the culprits; and also demanded for immediate action against the illegally erected shop/structure erected on government-acquired land along the four-lane Margao-Navelim road.
SCM further called upon the District Collector of South Goa, who also happens to be the custodian of government land, to take appropriate action in the matter of usurping government land.
