Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar on Friday distributed sewing machines along with the certificates to women from Mormugao constituency who successfully completed the tailoring courses under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana.
The sewing machines were distributed in the presence of Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) Councillor Shradha Amonkar, Director of Infotech Computer Education Training Academy Meena Mascarenhas and Community Organiser of the MMC Nandita Haldankar Sherlekar.
Amonkar told reporters that the sewing machines distributed would boost the morale of housewives and making them financially independent.
“Courses are being made available with an aim towards women empowerment and to generate self-employment. In the recent past, we have had training for women in coir-making and handloom sareee making through handicrafts department,” said Amonkar.
Providing details of the tailoring course, Amonkar said a scheme was launched in 2022 under the National Urban Livelihood Mission (NULM) initiative.
