PORVORIM
The much-awaited construction of a fire station and Multipurpose Cyclone Shelter (MCS) has begun opposite the Goa Cricket Academy at Porvorim.
The project, being constructed by Water Resources Department under the National Cyclone Risk Mitigation scheme at a cost of Rs 4.83 crore, is expected to be completed January 27, 2020.
Speaking to The Goan, Revenue Minister and Porvorim MLA Rohan Khaunte said the State government had purchased 2,640 sq metres of land from the Goa Housing Board.
“The MCS and fire station are being built under National Cyclone Risk Mitigation scheme. The central government and the World Bank have provided financial assistance to this project,” said Khaunte.
“Porvorim has developed at a rapid pace in recent years and has now become a satellite town of Panaji. Besides the assembly complex, high court building, government offices and private educational institutes, several commercial establishments have come up in Porvorim. Hence, the need for a separate fire station and a Multipurpose Cyclone Shelter arose,”he added.
“Fire tenders from Pilerne and Mapusa fire stations take long time to reach Porvorim due to heavy traffic en route and it is for this reason that I took the initiative to demand a fire station and cyclone shelter in Povorim,” Khaunte informed.
Penha-de-Franca Panch Sham Kamat mentioned that since Khaunte became the MLA of Porvorim, there has been an all round development of the constituency.
“Projects such as a water treatment plant, science park, Nana Nani park, sports complex at Socorro, Panchayat Ghar cum sports complex and the new Porvorim market have all been either set up or in the process of being constructed.”
“Other projects in the pipeline are the Revenue Bhavan and Hindu crematorium. The fire station was needed in Porvorim and because of his persistent efforts the project is materialising,” said Kamat.
