Making his first public comments on the 11-month shutdown of the mining industry in Goa, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the Central and State governments along with the two MPs were working hard on a “legal solution” to the logjam and restart operations in the sector. Modi acknowledged the distress among people dependent on the industry for their livelihood and said it was “genuine concern” as the mining industry had a significant contribution in generating livelihood to many.
Addressing booth-level workers of the BJP from South Goa parliamentary constituency at the multipurpose grounds, Borda via video-conferencing, the Prime Minster suo moto touched upon the sensitive issue before taking up questions from the party workers, drawing huge applause.
“The problem arose following a judgement of the Supreme Court. We are making efforts for a solution. We have consulted experts,” Modi said.
“People of Goa have concerns about mining. And their concern is genuine. We are trying to find out a solution to the crisis. The Centre, State and the two MPs from Goa have been working to address the issue. Discussions are underway with the concerned people how to address the issue of livelihood of the thousands of people dependent on
mining, which has been the revenue earning for the state as well”, Modi said.
Expressing satisfaction over the turn out of the South Goa booth level workers for an interaction with him over video conferencing, the Prime Minister thanked South Goa MP Narendra Sawaikar and his team. He has asked the party workers to give their feedback and inputs via the NaMo App.
Earlier, replying to a question posed by party mahila Sheila Parsekar, the Prime Minister said the world is now looking at India through a different angle. “Today, India is growing at a fast pace. There have been no scams in the last five years, but only schemes. The sanitation coverage has touched 98 per cent. From high inflation and low growth, the situation has now changed to high growth and low inflation”, Modi said, while making a fervent plea to the party booth-level workers to go to the grass roots and take the message of development to the people.
The Prime Minister addressed party booth workers of South Goa, Kholapur, Sattara, Hatkangale and Madha simultaneously on Sunday noon via video conferencing and the message he gave to the booth workers was to go to the door steps of the people with the achievements of the Modi government in the last five years.
He took the platform to hit out the political opponents for trying to forget a mahagattabandan ahead of the Lok Sabha polls to stop the BJP from returning to power. “The BJP represent the Jan Shakti and is committed to save and build the nation. The country is our family. They (Oppn) are fooling the people by claiming they are out to save democracy”, he said.
The Prime Minister further said his government is committed to take all sections of the society towards the path of progress and development. Referring to the government’s decision to provide 10 per cent reservation of jobs for the poor amongst the high castes, the Prime Minister said that efforts will be made to provide 10 per cent reserved seats for this class of people in educational institutions. He, however, made it clear that there will be no dilution in the reservation quota provided by the government for the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and the Other Backward Communities (OBCs). “We believe in Sab ka sath, Sab ka Vikas. No section of the people should have any reservations about the 10 per cent reservations for the poor amongst the high class people’, Modi asserted.
