WRD Minister Subash Shirodkar on Thursday morning launched the works of slope stabilisation with rock bolts and the RCC retaining wall at Vaddem in the presence of Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, MMC Chairperson Leo Rodrigues,Vice Chairperson Ramchandra Kamat, municipal councillors and residents.
Speaking to media later, Shirodkar said that it was a long pending demand to have a retaining wall in this landslide prone area.
"Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar had been regularly following up for this project and the works on this priority project will start by Monday and in case there is a need for additional height or length, we wilL take it up as well. Normally WRD works are required to be completed before June 10, but this work on the retaining wall will continue," said Shirodkar.
" We have sanctioned Rs 1 crore for the desilting of Maimolem lake and i have instructed the contractor to start the works by Monday. I urge the people to take good care of water bodies and though there is a law that allows action on people polluting water bodies, it is yet to be implemented. In case there are a small number of houses surrounding a water body, we can always take a small sewage pumping station to take care of their sewerage issues to ensure that water bodies are not polluted with sewage and dirty water. I have kept a target to build around 100 bhandaras before March 2024 and i have already sanctioned around 30 bhandaras across Goa. We are presently carrying out works on around 120 water bodies under Amrit Sarovar initiative." said Shirodkar.
"We have enough water at Salaulim to cater to the next 50 days and there is nothing to fear in South Goa but in North Goa there is a little issue but we are getting supply of water from the Tillari and other projects. To sort out water supply issues , especially in the North , we have launched a 250 MLD project and we have to take up construction of the barrage and store water and also purchase the required pumps. These works will be completed by 2024 -25 and this will also ensure that there is no water supply issue in North Goa for drinking and farming purposes for the next 20 years," said Shirodkar.
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar said that the project of the retaining wall was taken up at the cost of around Rs 5 crores.
"This was a long pending demand of the locals and we took those works up under disaster management after a lady died here when a boulder crashed on her house. We have taken the works to stabilise the slope using rock bolt and construction of a RCC retaining wall because we will have the monsoons soon. We are constructing a retaining wall of around 150 metres to cover the most vulnerable areas in the first phase . In case there is a need for extending the retaining wall, we will put all the estimates and take it in the next phase, " said Salkar.
