In compliance with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) directives to conduct “Pariksha Parv” for heads of institutions during the exam period, the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (GSCPCR) conducted a day-long workshop for heads of institutions at St Joseph Vaz Renewal and Spiritual Center, Old Goa.
The SCERT also collaborated in organising the workshop.
The workshop was conducted with an aim to work on changing the outlook of students towards exams, as the NCPCR has observed that there is an increase in suicides amongst children due to anxiety.
This is the second year that NCPCR is conducting Pariksha Parv across the country, which it hopes will make exams a joyful activity.
The Goa workshop was split into three lecture sessions followed by a panel discussion on the question of ‘social quotient and parenting’, ‘emotional quotient’ and ‘sharing experiences’ by a student volunteer. SCERT Director Nagaraj Honnekeri moderated the panel discussion.
Dr Jyoti Chauthiwale, resource person from NCPCR, principal Dr Allan Abreu, and reputed psychiatrist Dr Peter Castellino conducted the three sessions respectively. The sessions dealt with “Destressing the exam stress” and the “Psychological aspects of facing exams and results.”
Further, Chairperson of GSCPCR, Advocate Sushma Mandrekar, narrated to the heads of institutions experiences of her own childhood and spoke of how her parents gave her and her siblings the freedom to choose their own goals. She, however, spoke of her mother’s concern to always provide her siblings and her with a healthy diet.
Mandrekar also spoke of how her father focused on giving them good moral values. She then spoke about how she went on to study law.
The heads of institutions who were sensitised are expected to further sensitise the teachers, parents and students on exam anxiety.
