The State government will come up with a world class maritime institute at Britona in Aldona constituency, which will offer 18 new courses bringing much cheer to the Goan youth interested in making a career in seafaring.
Ports Minister Michael Lobo on Thursday announced that the maritime institute will be constructed on build, operate, own and transfer (BOOT) basis and will come up on an area of around 5000 sq mt land owned by Captain of Ports in Britonna.
“This institute will cater to a lot of youth who wants to make a career on cruise or cargo ships or even those who want to join as cadets in the Indian Navy. The institute will also offer courses for those who want to work at dockyards,” Lobo said.
He said the government will have full control on fees to be charged to students for the courses offered at the institute.
The Ports Minister was addressing a gathering after hoisting the tri-colour on the occasion of the Liberation Day function at the government complex in Mapusa.
Aldona MLA Glen Ticlo, Mapusa MLA Joshua D’Souza, Mapusa Municipal Council Chairperson Ryan Braganza, councilors and senior administrative officials were also present.
Continuing, Lobo said the total cost of the project has been worked out to around to Rs 32 crore and more than 1,500 students “ boys and girls “ are expected to pass out in a year.
“Today, our boys and girls have to move to Mumbai, Bangalore and elsewhere for training. Many times they get certificates but do not get adequate training,” he said.
“The youth of Goa will be able to train at a very reasonable cost rather than going out of Goa and spend huge sums of money,” he added.
He said Goan youth go out of the State and get training for eight days but obtain certificates for a three-month course because they are in a hurry.
“In Goa, we will give certificates after completing the courses. This will be fully recognized by government of Goa,” the Ports Minister said.
Lobo said the government will not spend a single rupee in construction but only provide land to the successful bidding contractor.
“A model is being worked out where the successful bidder who runs the institute will pay the government around Rs 2.5 to 3 crore per year. Plus, Goans will get an opportunity to train and get jobs or be self-employed,” he said.
He said expressing of interest will be out in one of these days and those who qualify will be called for a presentation.
