A day after thousands of Goans emulated protesters across the country on Wednesday to demonstrate their opposition to the controversial Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) at the historic Azad Maidan in the capital, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant assured residents of the State that they need not worry as the amended Citizenship law will not adversely affect them at all.
“About the Citizenship Amendment Act, which was passed, all residents of Goa, be it Hindu, Muslims, Christians, no one needs to worry. For this, what precautions need to be taken have been taken,” Sawant told journalists after the official Liberation Day function at the Parade Ground, Campal, where he took the salute and also hoisted the tricolour.
Sawant said it was his duty to protect the interests of all Goans irrespective of caste and creed.
“Be it Hindu, Christians or Muslims. I assure you on the occasion of Liberation Day that no one will be troubled on account of it (CAA),” Sawant added.
Meanwhile earlier in his speech during the
official function at the Parade Grounds, Sawant took oblique pot-shots at political opponents and urged the Goan populace not to fall prey to the “false publicity” indulged in by them.
On Wednesday, thousands owing allegiance to civil society organisations and Opposition parties, including the Congress and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), had converged at the iconic Azad Maidan to lodge their protest against the CAA as well as the National Register of Citizens (NRC).
Meanwhile, while paying homage to Goa’s freedom fighters, Sawant said his government will ensure that their children will all be provided jobs. Some kin of those who participated in Goa’s liberation movement had been agitating for some weeks now demanding reservation in recruitment as promised by Sawant’s predecessor, the late Manohar Parrikar.
