WRD employee arrested for fatal mishap at Curchorem

A 43-year-old man from Keri-Ponda was arrested in connection with the road mishap which claimed the life of a 60-year-old mofussil journalist from Curchorem.

According to reports, the road mishap took place on Wednesday afternoon, when Paul Carvalho was riding his scooter.

Eknath Gawde, who works at the WRD office in Ponda, was driving a car when his vehicle knocked down the scooter. The impact was such that Carvalho was flung to some distance and suffered grievous injuries.

Carvalho was moved to the Curchorem Community Health Centre (CHC) and later shifted to the South Goa District Hospital at Margao. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to the GMC hospital at Bambolim, where he died on Friday afternoon while undergoing treatment.

Curchorem police later arrested Gawde in this connection and he was admitted to a hospital in Margao after claiming to be unwell.

Gawde later filed a bail application before a court and he was released on bail of Rs 50,000.

Meanwhile, the media community in and around Curchorem have mourned the demise of Carvalho. While he was a former clerk at the Guardian Angel Higher Secondary School, Curchorem, Carvalho was also a mofussil journalist for local newspapers and was active in church activities.
