In a rare case, a Vasco-based patient who was referred to KLES-Belgaum for a surgery to remove a stomach tumor but was charged despite being a DDSSY universal health insurance card holder, was re-imbursed the money by the hospital following a nearly three-month-long battle with the authorities.
The patient, a family member of the Vasco-based John J Clark’s family was admitted to KLES, Belgaum in August last year. She was referred to the hospital by the Goa Medical College.
The hospital, despite being informed that the patient is a DDSSY card holder, allegedly misled the family that the particular illness was not covered under the scheme and charged additionally for medicines and hospitalisation.
After the patient’s discharge the matter was reported to the DDSSY consultant Dr Balkrishan Pai, who advised filing a detailed complaint, but nothing materialized.
However, after the patient’s family threatened to take legal action, the money was re-imbursed in two installments.
