VALPOI
Raising strong concerns about gambling activities in Poriem-Sattari, over 100 youth have petitioned the Valpoi police to shut down gambling dens in the area.
In a memorandum to Valpoi police, the youth had appealed to authorities to take serious steps in the matter, else there would be an adverse effect on the younger generation on account of gambling activities.
Speaking to reporters, some locals said the youth had been attracted to the gambling activities in Poriem.
“On frequent occasions, youth have been requesting officials to take serious steps in the matter, but nothing had been done in the matter and as a result, these gambling activities have only increased. This could seriously affect the younger generation,” said Gurudas Gaonkar of Poriem. “People in the village are now afraid that their children could get addicted to gambling activities,” Gaonkar added.
According to sources, gamblers are reported to have threatened some youth who had signed on the memorandum submitted to Valpoi police.
“Some gamblers have taken key interest in organising special dramas to promote gambling activity in the area,” said the source.
