The deceased, Efton Fernandes, 17, was found trapped beneath the Kia car, which was reportedly heading towards Karwar. The other occupant, Mayank Pagi, 19, of Agonda, escaped with fractures to his hand and leg.
Police said the car was travelling at high speed when the driver lost control near Bhagatwada shortly before 4 am. The vehicle veered off the four-lane highway, reportedly rolled over several times and fell into a waterlogged field about two metres below the road.
Fernandes was allegedly thrown out of the car and fell headfirst into the marshy field before the vehicle landed on top of him, trapping him underneath. Despite his injuries, Pagi managed to crawl out of the vehicle and walk some distance before contacting an acquaintance in the locality, who alerted the police.
On reaching the bypass, the police initially could not locate the accident site. With the injured youth’s help, they traced the vehicle submerged in the marshy field about 15 metres from the road.
Fire and Emergency Services personnel were called to the scene and extricated Fernandes from beneath the vehicle. He was taken to the Community Health Centre in Canacona, where doctors declared him brought dead.
Canacona police conducted the inquest panchanama and shifted the body to the South Goa District Hospital, Margao, for further formalities. A case of unnatural death has been registered under Section 194 of the BNSS, and further investigation is being carried out by PSI Vishal Velip.
