The Aam Aadmi Party on Wednesday asked Chief Minister Pramod Sawant not to consider the Zilla Panchayat election result as a victory for his party as the elections were held in a clandestine manner without giving the Opposition any chance to canvass or contact its voters.
AAP Goa convener Rahul Mhambre said the BJP was well aware of the whole schedule of the polls and hence galvanised its workers to contact the voters while BJP ministers misled the Opposition by constantly stating that the elections would be held in January.
He pointed out that nearly 60 per cent of the voters did not vote for the BJP and hence the ruling party cannot claim to have any real victory as the results were a result of a very sinister plan under which the Opposition was not given any time to canvass while the BJP merrily went about garnering votes.
“The CM himself claims to have got 40 per cent of the vote share which means more than half the electorate did not vote for his party,” said Mhambre while asserting that majority of the people who did not vote for BJP are against the projects floated by the BJP and hence he asked Sawant not to go ahead with the projects to which Goans are objecting.
“If the CM was so confident then why did he not have the elections in a proper manner by declaring the dates in advance and giving everybody a level playing field,” he asked.
He asserted that Goans are fed up of the BJP model of governance and are now looking for alterative as they are unhappy with the Congress also.
“The victory of AAP candidate in Benaulim who despite being a novice defeated heavyweights like former sarpanch and deputy sarpanch is an indication of people’s frustration with the BJP,” he said.
