An unusual situation confronts the Sakhali Municipal Council (SMC), with six councillors moving a no-confidence motion against the chairperson Yeshwant Madkar.

Following the death of SMC Deputy Chairperson Damodar Ghadi, both groups have six councillors.

While the BJP-backed group consists of Madkar, councillors Anand Kanekar, Shubhada Sawaikar, Dayanand Boryekar, Brahma Desai and Rashmi Desai, the Congress-backed group comprises Dharmesh Saglani, Jyoti Blaggon, Rajesh Sawal, Raya Parsekar, Ansira Khan and Kunda Madkar.

Incidentally, the election to the post of SMC deputy chairperson is scheduled on Thursday at 11 am and it is unclear which group will be successful in getting their councillor elected as vice-chairperson.

Nominations to the post have been filed by councillors Anand Kanekar and Rashmi Desai have filed nominations from the BJP-backed group as well as Jyoti Blaggon and Ansira Khan from the Congress-backed group.

The result could well end in a tie, which would then be decided by a draw of lots.
