While the area shortlisted at Cumbheabhatt stands dropped after locals objected to the shelter in a government primary school for want of wide roads, gram sabha members said the panchayat should identity land along the Velim-Zaino road before the land is acquired by the Goo government.
Velim sarpanch Melvyn Sanches pointed out that the gram sabha members have now zeroed in on the land along the Velim-Zaino road near the telephone department, but hastened to add that the suitability of the land will be known only after verifying details such as the tenants, zone, etc.
“While the GPS school at Cumbheabhatt was not accepted on grounds that there is no wide road for quick movement of vehicles, many gram sabha members felt that Velim should not allow the opportunity to slip away and instead suggested an alternate suitable site,” he said.
The special gram sabha was convened specifically to deliberate on the World Bank-funded scheme to set up the cyclone shelters in the state. Velim is one of the villages that was shortlisted for the setting up of
cyclone shelters.
