Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar, who also holds the Agriculture portfolio, said that farmers should benefit from multiple cropping patterns in their fields.
Affirming that the government is improving agriculture infrastructure, he asked farmers to take full advantage of it, as he laid the foundation stone for one of the three bandharas in Padi village.
The Deputy Chief Minister said that the government is currently investing in agricultural infrastructure, adding that work on the bandharas was part of this mission.
The bhandaras will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 2.1 crore, he said, even as he urged the farmers of Barcem and whole of Goa to avail the facilities and use multiple cropping patterns to produce multiple crops in the land available. “This will not only help them to produce more and improve their financial status, but if produced organically it will help whole of Goa to eat healthy local fruits and vegetables,” he said.
“Under the Horticulture Corporation, every month we import fruits and vegetables amounting to Rs 6-7 crore from other states as the quantity produced by Goan farmers is not adequate. If farmers modernize their techniques and make full use of these bandharas and the infrastructure facilities that the government is setting up, everyone will benefit from it,” Kavlekar said, while urging the local ZP and panch members to positively motivate local farmers in this regard.
