‘Fish ban will have no bearing on prices of poultry products’

‘Fish ban will have no bearing on prices of poultry products’

MARGAO: Will the ban on import of outside fish in the state from Thursday have any bearing on the price of eggs or live chicken for the next

12 days?

One good news is that wholesalers of poultry products do not foresee any sharp rise in the rates of their products, including eggs and live chicken. Eggs were priced at Rs 60 per dozen (Rs five per egg) and a kilogram of live chicken cost around Rs 110 at Ambica’s wholesale market near Cine Lata on Wednesday evening.

The reason is simple. Wholesalers said there’s a steady supply of chicken in the market for the moment because of the off-season, even though the price of eggs has seen an upward trend in the last few days

Ambica’s Rama Kuncolienkar explained that the rate of eggs and chicken are decided at the Belgaum market depending on the demand and supply. “Right now, a kilogram of chicken is pegged at Rs 110 in the wholesale market and eggs Rs 60 a dozen. The rates are revised every day at the Belgaum market depending several factors,” he said.

Rama, however, does not foresee any sharp rise in the price of chicken or eggs on account of the ban on the import of fish into Goa, though the rates may vary by Rs 5 or 10 depending on the demand and supply.

Some of the small-time eateries have already switched over to eggs on the lunch menu, with customers avoiding consumption of fish following the formalin scare.

While the wholesale prices of live chicken and eggs are decided at the Belgaum market, the retail rates of poultry products vary from place to place as per the whims and fancies of the retailers. While a kilogram of live chicken is pegged at Rs 110 at Ambica wholesale outlet near Cine Lata, the Ambica outlet in the SGPDA market complex follows the rate fixed by the retailers in the market. “The rates in the retail market vary from place to place and depend on the retailers. The wholesalers have no control over the rates fixed by the retailers,” Rama added.
