Justifying the decision of the Aam Aadmi Party to go solo in the upcoming Zilla Panchayat polls, AAP leaders on Saturday said the party would have suffered the same fate at the hands of the Congress if the party had offered alliance for the election.

Saying the Congress has taken non-BJP parties for a ride by offering hope for an alliance, party leader Gerson Gomes said the party was lucky that it did not fall into the Congress trap.

He said the Aam Aadmi Party had received flak and criticism over the party decision to contest the ZP polls without an alliance with non-BJP parties. “We took the criticism in our stride, but today the people would realise that AAP had taken the right decision. We would have also met the same fate like that the parties, which had joined hands with the Congress leaders,” he said.

Saying that AAP had taken the right decision to go alone in the ZP polls in the interest of the people of Goa, Gerson made a fervent plea to the people to think before casting their vote.

Referring to the Congress decision to field BJP leader Sanjay Velip for the Guirdolim ZP seat, which falls in Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao’s Cuncolim constituency, Gerson demanded to know whether the Congress had no right candidate in its ranks and had forced the party import the candidate from the BJP.

He also appealed to the people of Salcete to remain alert and vigilant on the BJP machination, reminding that the BJP will support Independent candidates in six out of the nine seats at stake in the taluka.
