CANACONA
Noted Marathi novelist Vishwash Patil has stated that the importance to English language had led many regional languages, including Konkani, to struggle in the country.
The Maharashtrian writer was speaking after inaugurating the 24th Akhil Bharatiya Konkani Sahitya Sammelan (ABKSP) at a resort in Canacona on Saturday.
“Konknni language had to fight not only colonialism, but also faced an onslaught from its own sister languages,” said Patil.
Appreciating Konkani’s rich cultural and traditional heritage, Patil advised ABKSP to ensure that the official language of the State is implemented with true spirit.
Several Konkani protagonists will participate in sessions during the two-day event with an aim to improve the status of Konkani language in the country.
W V R Murthy (Secretary, Languages) and Canacona Municipal Council Chairperson Nitu Desai were guests of honour. Sammelan head and Konkani writer Melvyn Rodrigues said the proper implementation of the official state language was the responsibility of everyone. On the occasion, several Sahitya Academy awardees were felicitated, while portraits of Konkani stalwarts were garlanded.
