Complaining that the Saligao Solid Waste Management Plant is treating more garbage than it was designed to handle, former minister and Saligao MLA Jayesh Salgaonkar said this was unacceptable to the residents of Saligao.
Salgaonkar was speaking at a function organised by Saligao panchayat to mark Gandhi Jayanti.
“While setting up the Saligao plant, the State government had assured residents that it would only treat garbage from Saligao and Calangute constituencies. However, it has now been discovered that the plant receives garbage from 27 panchayats.”
“Besides, the plant had been designed to treat garbage of 100 tonnes only, but it has been treating garbage exceeding this limit. This excessive garbage is unacceptable to residents of Saligao,” said Salgaonkar.
“Instead of spending crores of rupees on maintaining this plant every year, the government should give each panchayat Rs 2 crore and advise them to treat their own garbage. This would reduce the burden on the Saligao plant,” he added.
The MLA said the Kineco company had donated a garbage collection van to Saligao panchayat under its Corporate Social Responsibility. “This new van will help the Saligao panchayat to collect garbage on a day-to-day basis.”
He also said the Saligao panchayat would give two garbage bins to every household to segregate wet and dry garbage.
“Now, it is the responsibility of people to segregate garbage and hand it over to the panchayat. Without public support and cooperation, nothing is possible. People should help the panchayat to keep Saligao village clean,” said Salgaonkar.
Solid Waste Management Plant Engineer Dheeraj Chodankar said the Saligao SWMP has asked all 27 panchayats, which send garbage to the plant to fix leachate collection tanks to their garbage vehicle so
that garbage does not spill on the roads.
