A senior citizen died while another was seriously injured when a speeding tanker knocked down a scooter from the rear at Sancoale on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the mishap occurred at around 3.55 pm near 13 Studio Unisex Salon, Zuari Nagar, Sancoale, when a tanker which was proceeding towards Dabolim, rammed into an Activa scooter proceeding in the same direction.
The impact caused the rider, Akash Pawar (35) of Nagpur, and pillion rider, Madhukar Parab (69) of Thane, to be flung off the vehicle, sustaining severe injuries.
The driver of the tanker, identified as Mohardesh Shaikh, a native of West Bengal but residing at Zuarinagar, fled from the site.
The injured were rushed to SDH Chicalim by 108 ambulance, where doctors declared Parab brought dead. The rider Pawar is undergoing treatment for injuries. Police added that the tanker driver fled the spot without informing authorities or assisting the victims.
Verna police have registered a case under Sections 281, 125(a), 106 (1) of the BNS and Sections 134(a), 134(b) of the Motor Vehicles Act against the tanker driver.
The investigation is being carried out by PSI Pramila Fernandes under the supervision of PI Anand Shirodkar and guidance of Mormugao DySP Gurudas Kadam.
