PANAJI: With the state bearing the brunt of a heavy downpour in the last 24 hours, Goa has been placed under an Orange Alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for July 3 and 4. Dharbandora recorded the highest rainfall at 229.4 mm as extremely heavy to very heavy showers lashed several parts of the state, triggering widespread waterlogging, traffic disruptions, and structural damage.
The IMD has warned that the wet spell will continue across both North and South Goa districts, accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 kmph. While the intensity is expected to ease from July 5 onward, a yellow alert remains in place until July 9, forecasting heavy rain at isolated places and persistent strong winds.
Authorities have urged residents, especially those in low-lying and flood-prone zones, to remain vigilant. Paroda experienced significant flooding, prompting the closure of the Margao“Quepem road and diversion of traffic via Chandor.
Urban areas, including the state capital Panaji, were also hit hard. Heavy rainfall coupled with high tide led to extensive waterlogging in several parts of the city, submerging roads and disrupting vehicular movement.
At the Panaji KTC bus stand, pedestrians struggled with submerged and uncovered drains, with multiple reports of accidents. In Ribandar, a retaining wall near Ram Mandir collapsed around 8:30 am after initial cracks were observed.
The IMD has cautioned fishermen and the general public against venturing into the sea and advised close monitoring of updates from local authorities.
Despite the ongoing challenges, emergency services and law enforcement continue to be on high alert. “Rain won’t stop duty. Our officers are on-ground across Goa regulating traffic and ensuring safe movement during today’s heavy downpour. Drive safe and follow instructions,” stated SP Traffic in a post on X.
In neighbouring Karnataka, a landslide in Karwar taluka has blocked access to the Kodasalli Dam, isolating Balemane, Sulageri, and Kodasalli villages. Power House staff have been unable to reach the site, and debris clearance has been put on hold due to the risk of fresh landslides.
