3rd family member gets to be Agonda sarpanch

Badal Naikgaunkar was on Tuesday elected unopposed as the new sarpanch of Agonda and in doing so, achieved a record of sorts in Canacona taluka. Naikgaunkar hails from a family of sarpanchas and is now the third member in his family to serve as sarpanch of Agonda.

His younger brother Barsat Naikgaunkar (present panch) and their mother had also previously served as sarpanchas of Agonda. The sarpanch’s post had fallen vacant after Pramod Phaldessai was ousted in a no-confidence motion by four of seven members at Agonda panchayat.

At the special meeting, Canacona BDO Extension Officer Anil Naik declared Badal Naikgaunkar as elected unopposed after receiving his lone nomination for the post of sarpanch.

While two panch members, ex-sarpanch Pramod Phaldessai and Abel Borges were absent, five others, Badal Naikgaunkar, Dy Sarpanch Shilpa Pagui, Tipu Pagui, Barsat Naikgaunkar and Mandira Velip were present at the meeting.

Panchayat Secretary Sushant Lolayekar was also present to assist the Canacona BDO extension officer.

BELAGAVIBelagavi police raided a house in the suburban area of Belagavi city on Tuesday and seized 547 bottles worth Rs 12 lakh of Goa-made liquor and liquor meant for defence supplies.
