The Porvorim Primary Health Centre has reported 57 suspected cases of Dengue between April and September in the Porvorim constituency, of which 11 cases were confirmed.
There has been a significant reduction in malaria cases in and around Porvorim, with only seven cases (5 falciparum and 2 vivax) reported between April and September.
Porvorim PHC Health Officer Dr Shikandar Talwar said their surveillance teams are on a house-to-house campaign to collect blood samples of people with fever.
“Besides, we are conducting Information, Education and Communication programmes in every village coming under our jurisdiction to create awareness about dengue and malaria. As stagnant water provides a breeding ground for mosquitoes, the PHC has also engaged field workers in spraying of abate larvicide at construction sites and in open spaces where water gets stagnated. They are also carrying out fumigation activities wherever required. Fish to control mosquito larvae are also introduced in abandoned wells,” said Dr Talwar.
Dr Talwar further mentioned that they have been taking stringent action against builders and contractors who have not issued health cards to their labourers and those who violate the sanitation rules of the health department.
“During this year, they have penalised numerous contractors for violating health rules. Dengue cases in Porvorim are comparatively fewer than the cases reported by Candolim Primary Health Centre. The Porvorim PHC has been able to contain the spread of dengue and malaria in Porvorim constituency,” said Dr Talwar.
