Claiming that 800 names are planned to be deleted from the electoral rolls of the Mormugao constituency, GPCC Vice President Sankalp Amonkar alleged that the BLO, Mamlatdar, Deputy Collector had been under political pressure to delete the names.
Addressing a news conference along with other members of Mormugao Congress Block Committee members, Amonkar said there was misuse of power in deleting names of voters from the electoral list to benefit the BJP through the backdoor and assured they would not allow this irregularity to take place.
“There are 29 BLOs in the constituency entrusted to survey if a person is living in a particular area but they are being pressurised and BJP-backed councillors are doing this job. Some councillors have made a list of around 200 people, especially Congress voters and those people who don’t support the BJP.”
“Last time, 1,251 names were finalised for deletion from the electoral list and after we made a noise and staged a morcha to the Mamlatdar and Deputy Collector, most of the names were not deleted from the list.”
“This time, we have information that 800 names have been provided for deletion and I have met the Mamlatdar, Deputy Collector and all CLP leaders and briefed them on this issue,” said Amonkar.
Amonkar insisted that names could not be deleted unless a person was dead or had changed one’s nationality. “Even the name of a woman who has married and residing at a different place can be only shifted but not deleted.”
“After I met the Mamlatdar, I realised they were working under political pressure and BLOs are also pressurised to finalise the names without carrying out proper survey.”
“We have around 20,000 voters in Mormugao constituency and the BJP has already tried to delete around 2,000 names in the list, 1,251 names in February and now, 800 names. We will not allow this to happen,” said Amonkar.
He also accused the BJP of trying to modify wards as per their voters and shifting voters in different wards ahead of municipal elections to benefit them through the backdoor.
