9 new cases in Pernem, count nears 1,500

PERNEM
Nearly 1,500 people have officially tested positive for Covid in Pernem taluka after nine new cases were detected on Wednesday.

The new cases were reported in Paliem (1), Tuem (3), Arambol (2) and Korgao (3), taking the total number of cases to 1,492 in the taluka.

Mopa is the worst-hit panchayat with 210 cases, followed by Mandrem (181), Pernem town (133), Tuem (108), Dhargal (91), Korgao (85) and Arambol (85). The death toll stands at 16.

Meanwhile, Pernem Congress Block President and North Goa General Secretary Umesh Talwanekar warned the State government of an agitation if the Covid care centre at Sawalwaddo is not made operational within the next eight days.

"We will conduct a pooja of the centre and bang the dhols as a way to awaken the government and Pernem MLA Babu Ajgaonkar who is hiding in Margao.”

“MLAs are supposed to be enquiring about public health, but they aren't even seen in their own constituencies. The BJP government is playing with the health of locals," said Talwanekar.
