The newly elected president of Comunidade de Boa Esperança de Aldona, Melwyn Fernandes has pledged to take strict action against illegal constructions on comunidade land, stating that such structures will be demolished as per the Supreme Court's directive.
Speaking to the media after the elections held on Sunday, Fernandes reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the law.
“I had promised all my Gaonkars that any house built illegally on comunidade land “ no matter how old “ will be demolished in accordance with the Supreme Court order,” he said.
He specifically mentioned that approximately 60 unauthorized houses in Ramtolem and Sainagar, built without the required No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the comunidade, would face demolition.
"I don’t think these houses will remain standing as per the SC order," he added. However, he clarified that religious structures, including temples, would not be affected.
The elections for the new committee were held peacefully, with the entire panel elected unopposed.
The committee for the 2025-2028 term will be led by Fernandes as president, Melroy Ferrao as attorney, and Jeremias Fernandes as treasurer.
Savio Fernandes was elected as substitute president, Benjamin Afonso as substitute attorney, and Agustinho Alcantara as substitute treasurer.
Expressing satisfaction with the election process, Fernandes emphasized the importance of keeping political influence out of comunidade affairs.
“Our committee is by the Gaonkar, for the Gaonkar and of the Gaonkar. We believe that politicians should not interfere in comunidade elections or functioning. If we remain free from political interference, our unity will be preserved,” he stated.
