The Additional Sessions Court, Panaji has adjourned to November 30 hearing anticipatory bail applications filed by the two absconding key accused in the case of theft and smuggling of food grains from Civil Supplies’ warehouses.
Sachin Naik Borkar and Virendra Mardolkar, both of whom are on the run since the registration of the offence last week, were quick to move the Court seeking pre-arrest relief. When the matter came up for hearing, the Court postponed it to November 30 as the Judge is on leave.
While the accused, in their applications claimed they are being targeted owing to political interference, the CB officers maintained the accused are actively involved in stealing away the food grains in large quantities which are subsequently sold in open markets in Karnataka at a higher price.
As many as 1014 bags of wheat and rice, worth over Rs 12 lakh, were seized in back-to-back raids by the CB sleuths mid-last Tuesday. The commodities are meant to be distributed among the ration card holders under the Public Distribution System through Fair Price Shops but these were routed to private agents for sale in the open market across the border.
