Anti-coal awareness meet spreads to Calangute

MAPUSA
A large crowd attended an awareness meet as an anti-coal rally spread along the Calangute coastal belt on Tuesday evening.

The rally, which was organised by the Calangute Deanery youth along with the Chicalim Youth Farmers Club, passed through Sinquerim, Aguada fort, Candolim and Baga, before culminating at Calangute beach for public meeting to create awareness on environmental destructive mega projects in the State.

Speakers at the meeting severely criticised upcoming projects such railway double tracking, highway widening, etc.

Groups of youth also presented street plays and songs with themes based on Goa’s rich biodiversity.

Capt Viriato Fernandes of Goencho Awaz appealed to people to unite against the State government which has been planning to destroy environment in the name of development.

“The government is planning to bring coal in the State through the railways, waterways and even roadways and that is why they are supporting these projects despite intense public objections. We should stand united to let them know that we don’t want coal in Goa,” said Capt Fernandes.

Chicalim Parish Priest Fr Bolmax Pereira appealed to the people to be prepared to oppose destructive projects in the State.
