Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho has publically appealed to Health Minster Vishwajeet Rane to get doctors and medical staff deputed at the Chicalim Sub District Hospital in the wake of the death of a six-year-old at the health facility, allegedly due to negligence of the staff there.
"I am deeply pained by the death of the six-year-old girl due to dengue and I have already started my own investigation and fact-finding of this issue. The most stringent action against will be taken against the doctors if they are at fault in this case and there is no two ways about this. But we need to investigate first," Godinho said.
"Secondly there are more reasons attached to this issue and this incident was waiting to happen. I have been repeatedly asking Health Minister Vishwajit Rane to appoint additional staff at the Chicalim Sub District Hospital, which is short of staff at present.
"We have such a huge hospital with so many rooms and beds, and with the rising number of patients, we need more staff. I have been repeatedly pressing for additional staff and doctors at the hospital for over two years now and I expect my request will be considered."
'Don't politicise girl's death'
Godinho, meanwhile, said that it was "sad and shameful" that some leaders were trying to play politics in the dengue death case.
"Some people have indulged in politics on the death of the girl and this has become their habit to find something in any issue and try to show someone else who is working in a bad light. I was very saddened by the girl's death but these leaders are enacting a political drama at the police station which should not have been done. They are dancing over somebody's death," said Godinho.
