Karnataka PWD Minister Satish Jarkiholi has said repairs of the dilapidated Belagavi-Goa road via Chorla will be taken up soon and a proposal sent to the NHAI is likely to be approved in the near future.
He was answering a question regarding the dilapidated Belagavi-Goa and Khanapur Haliyal road. The question was raised by Member of Legislative Council Dr Talwar Sabanna late Wednesday evening at the ongoing session of the Winter Session of Karnataka State Legislature at Belagavi.
“Most of the roads in Khanapur taluka, which is known as the most neglected and underdeveloped taluka of Belagavi district, are in bad condition. Even though 76 years have passed since the country gained independence, some villages in the forest region of the taluka still have no roads,” stated Dr Sabanna, while seeking an answer on measures initiated by the State Government.
“State and national highways from Belagavi to Panaji passing through the taluka are not in good condition. Due to the poor condition of these highways, which are supposed to provide smooth movement from one place to another, they have become life-threatening for commuters.”
Answering the question, Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi said, the contract for the work of National Highway from Belagavi to Goa via Chorla has been awarded.
Since many stretches of the highway are passing through reserved forest areas, the forest department's rules are becoming obstacles in undertaking the road work. However, the estimated list of works to be done by the public works department to keep this highway in good condition is Rs 58.64 crore, which has been sent to the NHAI for approval, Jarkiholi replied, stating that the approval is awaited to be cleared soon and the work is likely to be taken up in near future.
